Choosing a Juicer

How do you choose a juicer ?  There are a several factors that will influence your decision in investing in a juicer. You are going to own your juicer for years, using it daily, so there are a few important factors to consider before buying a juicer.

Obviously price is an important factor, what you want to juice, the time it takes to prepare the juice, the clean up time, the size of the hopper, the amount of heat it produces (the more heat a juicer produces, the more nutrients are destroyed in the juicing project), the juice yield, the power of the juicer and/or the noise level when the juicer is operating.

Juicing Fruit and Vegetables

If you only wish to juice citrus fruits, you only need to buy a citrus juicer, but if you want to juice other fruits and vegetables, like broccoli, coconut or asparagus, beetroot or wheatgrass, you need to invest in a better quality juicer to that will do the job.

Cleaning a Juicer

Some juicers are a nighmare to clean, so if you don't have much patience or time on your hand, ensure that you look for an easy-clean juicer.

The Size of the Juicer's Opening

The size of the hopper, or the juicer's opening is very important, particularly if you can't be bothered cutting the fruit and vegetables up into small pieces before juicing. The larger the juicer's opening, the faster and more convenient it is to use whilst juicing.

Does the Juicer Heat the Juice?

Some cheaper juicers are very effective, but the motor often heats the juice, which can destroy some of the nutrients in the juice that is produced. If healthy juice is just as important as tasty juice, it's worthwhile investing a little extra in your juicer.

Dry Pulp

When a quality Juicer is working to its optimum, the pulp it produces should be almost dry, as this produces the maximum juice yield, with the maximum nutrients. If the pulp is wet or juicy, each glass of juice is costing you more money, as you need more produce to get the same amount of juice. If you use an extra 5 oranges and 5 apples each week to get the same amount of juice you get from a dry pulp juicer, you could be spending an extra £180 to £200 a year by buying a cheaper juicer!

Heavy duty Juicing

If you are a daily juicer, you need to consider buying a juicer that has a quality motor that will last. You should only consider buying a cheap juicer if you only intend to use it for the occasional use. Most quality juicers have 5 or 10 year warranties, whereas cheaper juicers often only have warrantees for a year or two years.

Juicer Noise Level

Personally, I don't really care if my juicer makes a noise, but it's important to some people and if you are one of these people, check if the the juicer makes a lot of noise of if it is nearly silent, prior to deciding which juicer to choose.

Buying a juicer is like buying a car, you can buy from either end of the market, depending on price and quality. My advice, when choosing which juicer to buy, is to buy the very best that you can afford, as it will save you money in the long term and will be a please to use each day!
